General Motors is working with Microsoft and OpenAI to develop a virtual assistant for its vehicles. The solution will be used Azure cloud service and OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology.
The virtual assistant powered by ChatGPT will be able to provide information about the vehicle’s features, help the driver troubleshoot diagnostic issues, and view informative videos about maintenance and repairs.
The technology will be tailored specifically for use in vehicles, with a “car-specific layer” applied to ChatGPT’s artificial intelligence. However, unpredictable reactions from the chatbot are not expected in cars. GM has yet to announce a release date for the virtual assistant.
General Motors’ partnership with Microsoft has been ongoing since at least 2021, when GM’s autonomous vehicles subsidiary Cruise decided to use Azure to advance the direction of its cars.
competition for technology
Fully incorporated AI in cars should prevent unsafe driving caused by smartphone manipulation. companies like Google, Apple and Amazon they are working to improve the situation by integrating their phones into cars.
Apple and Google have worked with automakers to integrate their phones via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Google’s assistant goes even further, allowing drivers on select models to control the vehicle’s climate with their voice.
But automakers fear that tech companies will take control of auto technology and turn them into low-profit hardware vendors. General Motors and other automakers are trying to transform themselves into tech companies, but integrating all the parts into one perfect operating system is a huge challenge.
