This image was taken by NASA on March 3 when the probe was about 170 km from Shackleton Crater. Characterized by rugged terrain and steep slopes, this vast mountainous region was formed about four billion years ago.
NASA included this site and about 12 others on the list because of the abundance of various geological features. According to NASA, these areas could be a good landing site for the Artemis 3 mission, which is scheduled to launch before 2025. During this mission, two astronauts are scheduled to walk on the lunar surface for the first time since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972.
