Our body needs iron to make the protein hemoglobin. This protein is found in red blood cells (erythrocytes) as it provides oxygen to the body. If there is not enough iron, red blood cells shrink and carry less oxygen.

In the early stages, iron deficiency may not manifest itself in any way. This is because the body can use iron stores in the liver and muscles. But when these reserves are depleted, the person develops anemia.

According to National Health Service experts, there are four symptoms of iron deficiency that occur during meals. These are difficulty in swallowing, pain in the tongue, change in taste, desire to eat inedible things (soap, chalk, etc.).
