The researchers took samples from different parts of the water bottles. Various bacteria were found there, including gram-negative bacteria and bacilli.
The former can cause various infections such as pneumonia and become increasingly resistant to antibiotics. The latter is the cause of gastrointestinal problems. “The human mouth is home to a wide variety of bacteria. Therefore, it is not surprising that drinking vessels are covered with microbes,” the scientists said.
Experts recommend washing refillable bottles in hot, soapy water.
