More than 200 workers were laid off at the company’s Swiss office this week, according to Reuters. Even the Zurich office workers began to go on strike in protest. They even offered to take pay cuts or working hours to avoid layoffs.

Current and former employees say Google is “hard” for employees who are on sick or maternity leave at the time of layoff – it’s not just a matter of employees getting paid when medical or family issues arise.

It’s also a constant matter of medical care: Google provides many benefits to its employees, and the company even has agreements with medical institutions that many employees use. And often getting fired means instantly losing access to these institutions, which is what happened to some former Googlers. Including Kate Howells, who said she was kicked out of her hospital bed shortly after giving birth. She worked for the company for nine years.
