Most of the cells that make up a living organism originate from “stem” cells that divide at the very beginning of the organism’s formation. These cells then specialize, differentiate and form muscles, brains, bones, immune cells, etc. stops replication.

The new study found that this ability to proliferate isn’t just limited to stem cells, it also has an as-yet-undiscovered function of immune blood cells called monocytes.

These cells, previously thought to be already differentiated, can proliferate and form a pool of monocytes in tissues, giving rise to macrophages – important immune cells that protect us from microbes and keep our organs functioning properly.
