Apple recommends using sensors inside a device with a folding or rolling screen. They will detect “vertical acceleration relative to the ground” to determine if the device has fallen.

The patent filing adds that even if the screen is folded at an angle of less than 180 degrees, it’s still fine because the edges of the device will hit the ground and the screen will stay intact.

Recall that in 2014, Apple filed a patent for a system that would use an internal vibration motor that rotates the iPhone in midair so that it falls on the smartphone’s lid, not on the screen. From this, by the way, it seems that Apple does not necessarily have to deal with a folding device (well, otherwise I missed the release of a smartphone that will rotate in the air).
