Currently, only a few medical institutions worldwide have the capacity to administer this next generation of radiation therapy. DNA damage from heavy ion bombardment is more severe than that caused by conventional radiation therapy.

However, how these more potent damages are processed in mammalian cells is not fully understood. But there is already progress. As mentioned above, cancer cells can be regenerated even after the most recent radiation therapy. The mechanism is not yet fully understood. Therefore, there is a lot of work to be done on helping to better treat cancer over time.
