“The way these objects scatter radar beams is fundamentally different from that scattering by rocky worlds such as Mars and Earth, as well as smaller objects such as asteroids and comets,” writes one of the study’s authors.
Therefore, the scientists conducted a study, the results of which show that the unusual radar properties of these satellites, such as reflectivity and polarization, are most likely due to the effect of coherent backscattering on the opposite side (the sun is located directly behind it).
The researchers hope to observe again when possible and plan to examine additional archival data to confirm their theory.
