It is possible that some properties will remain on land as a result of rising sea levels, but it will not be possible to live there as the rising water level will cut off communication with essential services. A group of researchers analyzed the risk of isolation caused by rising sea levels and showed that this is almost the main problem the United States could face.
Rising water levels can cause coastal people to lose access to roads due to high tides, long before the ocean “arrives” in the area. The most important infrastructure – water supply and sewage, electricity, etc. – often stretches along the roads. Therefore, loss of access to roads, even due to occasional flooding, can render an area uninhabitable.
Even in the best-case scenario for sea level rise (0.5 meters by 2100), more than half a million people will be at risk of isolation as early as 2080.
