The scientists reported that this is the first study to evaluate the combined effect of fitness and blood pressure on the risk of death from cardiovascular disease.
The study included 2,280 men aged 42 to 61 years living in eastern Finland who participated in the coronary heart disease risk factors study. Baseline measurements were taken between 1984 and 1989. Participants were followed up to 2018. During the median follow-up period (29 years), 644 deaths from cardiovascular disease occurred.
It was found that men with high blood pressure and low physical fitness were more than twice as likely to die from heart disease compared to men with normal blood pressure and high physical fitness. Men with high blood pressure and high fitness continued to have an increased risk of cardiovascular death, but were weaker, “only” 55% higher than men with normal blood pressure and high physical fitness.
