A person’s emotional state influences the chemical compounds their body releases with sweat, the researchers said. So they decided to do an experiment.
They took sweat samples from volunteers who experienced certain emotions. Emotions were aroused by watching movies and commercials. The samples were then analyzed. In total, chemists have found more than 300 different compounds in sweat.
Preparations made with these substances were tested on 48 women with social phobia. “We found that subjects exposed to the smell of sweat from people who watched funny or scary movies responded better to mindfulness therapy (compared to those who did not experience such exposure),” the study authors said.
They suggested that even the presence of a person nearby could have a similar effect.
