The fight between TikTok and the US government took a new turn on Thursday, 23 when Shou Zi Chew, CEO of the Chinese video app, delivered a speech before the US Congress. He tried to defend the social network against the accusations he was accumulating in the country.

Among them are concerns about how TikTok will handle the private data of its users. The United States also has reservations about the app’s possible connection with the Chinese government to “obtain” data illegally.

In this scenario, the US government may force TikTok to sell some of its business in the country or even ban it at its borders, completely banning app-related activities. It was therefore up to Chew to convince Congress that social networking policies and data processing were safe and did not violate US law. However, as some analysts who followed the process (via Business Insider) revealed, things did not go well.

Matthew Schettenhelm of Bloomberg Intelligence, who reached the agreement, pointed out that Chew’s defense may have worsened TikTok’s position in the US. “I don’t think you made new friends today and managed to change your mind. This will always be a bad day for TikTok.”

Business Insider’s post also reveals that lawmakers appeared disappointed during the questioning of Chew, who seemed a bit evasive. “Nothing you’ve said so far has convinced me,” said Delaware Democrat Lisa Blunt Rochester. “And frankly, I think your statement raises more questions than it answers.”

No decision has been made for now, but it’s still a possibility that TikTok will be banned completely in the US.
