The study was carried out on 92 thousand people aged between 40 and 73, wearing accelerometer wristbands. With 3,080 participants dying in the seven-year follow-up, the researchers found that exercise neutralized the negative effects of too little or too much sleep.
In low-activity individuals, short and long naps increase the risk of death from all causes by 16% and 37%, respectively. However, increasing physical activity to a moderate or high level neutralizes this risk. The researchers concluded that exercise is an effective way to combat the negative effects of regular sleep deprivation.
However, as the scientists pointed out, more detailed studies are needed to confirm this result and elucidate the mechanisms underlying this interaction.
