As the authors of the scientific study point out, the data suggest that both sleep and genetic factors play important roles in asthma risk. Therefore, the combination of poor sleep and high genetic predisposition would lead to more than double the risk.

At the same time, a healthy sleep pattern can reduce the risk of asthma by 37% in people with a high genetic predisposition. All study participants were between the ages of 38 and 73. They were asked about sleep duration, insomnia, snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, and whether they viewed themselves as “larch bird” or “owl”. The study found that about one in five (19%) cases of asthma could be prevented if adults improved the quality of these five conditions.
