Fraudsters have found a new way to steal money from bank cards – they use a QR code to withdraw cash. The Central Bank explained that the QR code is actually an authorization for the bank to issue money, in this case it is not required to enter a PIN code.
The Bank of Russia said that the attackers began using a QR code to withdraw cash from bank cards.
Scammers call the customer under the guise of a bank employee and ask them to send a QR code generated for cash withdrawal to prevent an unauthorized transaction.
“Having obtained the code, the employees of the fake bank simply withdraw money from the ATMs from the account of the deceived person,” the Central Bank said.
The Central Bank explained that the presentation of a QR code is permission to withdraw cash. Entering a PIN code is not required in this case, the Bank of Russia noted.
The QR code cash withdrawal feature is available at some banks. The client indicates the amount required for the withdrawal, generates a QR code and takes it to the ATM, after which he receives cash.
