The bus is used by microcontrollers and other devices to communicate and perform tasks within the vehicle. By gaining access to the network, thieves can enter fake messages, trick the security system to unlock the car and disable the engine immobilizer.
They can access the network by breaking the headlight and using its connection to send messages. This method of theft is made possible by the fact that in most vehicles internal messages are not secure.
Cybersecurity researcher and automotive consultant Jan Tabor discovered this method after his RAV4 was stolen. Tabor noticed that the front bumper, belt frame and headlight wiring connector had been removed.
