Representatives of electric vehicle maker Tesla and the Lingang District of the Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone have signed an agreement to build a “super factory” for the production of ultra-high-capacity commercial power Megaback batteries.

Tesla to build a ‘superfactory’ in Shanghai to produce super-high-capacity Megapack batteries

The signing ceremony was reported by the local edition of The Paper, citing Surging News. The source writes that the originally planned annual production volume is up to 10,000 energy storage devices with a total capacity of up to 40 GW/h.

The start of construction of the plant is scheduled for the third quarter of 2023, and the factory is expected to be put into operation at the end of the second quarter of next year.

It is also Tesla’s first project to create a “superfactory” for the production of energy storage devices outside the US. The company already has a factory in China that Elon Musk was about to visit, Bloomberg wrote a day before.

Tesla’s strategy repeatedly mentions the desire to fully switch to sustainable energy and achieve 100% sustainable energy by 2050.

The company believes that the future of renewable energy depends on the ability to store large amounts of energy. Tesla’s Megaback Battery Pack is a tool that could do just that.

Megapack is a modular battery system that can be connected to solar panels. The power of each one is about 3 MW/h.
