Watched Super Mario Bros. Movie. Everyone expected failure, but it turned out just a gun

The release of the long-awaited film “Super Mario Bros. Movies” took place. In Russia, the release of new items is expected this week.

Fans of Nintendo and the franchise have been waiting for this for years. Before that, there was only a full-fledged film adaptation in 1993, which did not seek success among the audience. The film, from co-directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenick, invites players to experience the franchise as more than just a video game.

The lighting is comparable to Nintendo’s experience of truly intriguing all fans after the first trailer. The studio that gave us the amazing cartoons “Despicable Me” and “Minions” will surprise us again. But not all films are to your liking.

We are already reviewing the cartoon and sharing our impressions. We explain why this movie may appeal mainly to fans, and not everyone.

1. There are a lot of references here

The whole cartoon is just oversaturated with easter eggs and references that real fans will catch. It’s the same picture of Mario and Luigi, which has implications for various elements from the games.

Sometimes there is a feeling that directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenik (in the animated series Teen Titans Go!) revealed locations from different games across this universe. Here you have the mushroom kingdom from the classic Super Mario, and the neighborhood of Brooklyn, very similar to the city from Super Mario Odyssey, and even the race track from Super Mario Kart. Any game elements are recognized almost immediately.

The authors made a huge supply of fan service, and they succeeded. In an hour and a half film, they fit the manifestations of various phenomena in the game, sorted out the mechanics of events and literally transferred us to the world of the game.

The film is impossible not to associate with the game. Throughout the whole picture, the impression that you were settled in it – he is just as rich, like in platform games on the Nintendo Switch generation. With every new second you feel the magic of this universe and plunge into childhood.

2. The plot is crazy simple, but you need to understand it

In itself, the story of a simple and trying as the world. However, the writers are in no hurry to reveal the characters to us. The main focus is on Mario and Luigi. And, say, about Bowser, the main villain of the novelty, they tell us almost nothing. He is in love with the princess and wants to rule the world with her. All.

What is the movie about: Plumber brothers Mario and Luigi, accidentally falling into a pipe, open a portal to an underground city, from which they must rescue the captive Princess Peach and fight with the sworn enemy Bowser.

All of the above is the entire plot of the film. In fact, we not to restore the disease somehow strongly and not to make it more extensive. The novelty is similar to other simple creations Lighting: the first “Despicable Me” and “Eared Riot”. The structure is made up of the intention of the beginning about a dream, the driving development in the middle of the plot about the pursuit of it (and / or the search for new goals), and the initial ending with the enchanting victory of good over evil.

In general, you don’t expect from another children’s cartoon. However, Pixar does create thoughtful, meaningful storylines for their animations like Soul. And after this you expect no less from other studios.

3. There is high dynamics and a beautiful visual

What can not be taken away from the cartoon is its amazing dynamics. The picture is literally full of bright colors and catches the eye for the first seconds in the world of persecution.

The animation of the effects is expressed at an amazing level, as is their appearance – mushroom to mushroom, hair to hair, a truly lively look, believable facial expressions.

Separately, I was pleased with the rendering of the music of Mario and Bowser. You look at them and marvel at how much technology has advanced in recent years.

The camera work is also top notch.: there is a lot of interesting data about the plans and overflights of the camera in places of action, the lens movement scheme only adds dynamics to such a reckless expectation.

I am sure that in cinemas the 3D effect would look very handy. The same is noted in foreign reviews. However, it is not yet known whether 3D will be available in Russia.

4. Good humor in place

In terms of jokes and wit, Illumination never had any particular problems. For children’s cinema, jokes are met competently and do not cause rejection.

The discovery of Mario and Mushrooms was especially “delivered”. There are no gags, vulgarities and outhouse humor in the cartoon, all jokes are presented with high quality and appropriately. A more adult audience is unlikely to like them, but children will “drop in” perfectly well.

Worth a look

Deciding whether to go to this movie or not is your choice. I’m not sure that this picture will appeal to all viewers, but the fans will definitely appreciate it.

Here, the environment is carefully restored and the age of the faces is well tolerated. At the same time, the dynamics of growth at a high level from beginning to end leads to good humor. What else do you need for a children’s cartoon based on your favorite video games?
