Taking into account the molecular hydrogen dominance in the atmospheres of young planets, the researchers developed a new model for the formation and evolution of the Earth. They found that even if all of the rocky material that collided to form the planet was dry, the interaction between the hydrogen atmosphere and the magma ocean would produce significant amounts of water.

The researchers’ findings, published in the journal Nature, could explain Earth’s signature features, such as water abundance and its overall oxidized state. The paper’s lead author noted that the study provides only one possible explanation for Earth’s evolution, but establishes an important link between Earth’s formation history and the most common exoplanets found in orbits of distant stars.
