A statement released on April 1 by the University of Bonn (Germany) could be mistaken for an April Fool’s Joke: Scientists have discovered that cichlid fish and stingrays can perform simple addition and subtraction involving numbers one through five. Despite everything, work is realPublished the day before (31) Scientific ReportsAlthough it is not known exactly why these animals need to know basic math.

It was a fact already known to scientists that cichlids and rays can detect small amounts. However, the new experiment went even further, using ten experimental animals: six zebrafish mbuna Fish can do simple math, demonstrating work, and four stingrays,

How scientists taught to count fish and rays

The initial stimulus was a two-way image presented for five seconds. Then the fish swam through an open door into an area with two images: one with one shape, the other with three shapes.

If these two initial shapes were yellow, each time the fish swam towards the image it received only one yellow shape and a reward (reinforcement) associating that color with subtraction. If the first two shapes are blue, the fish got food only when they swam towards the three shapes, that is, when another one was added.

Next, the fish were trained to count: they were presented with an initial image of three shapes (yellow or blue) and were able to choose between two or four shapes in the test area. Mbuna zebras achieved splicing on the blue stimulus 82% of the time and 68% on the yellow stimulus (two tracks) (four tracks). kicks of stingrays was 96% in addition and 90% in subtraction.
