A team of researchers found that structural paint keeps surfaces 20 to 30 degrees cooler than conventional paints. The authors write that Paint’s ability to reflect heat is color-independent, opening up the possibility of “more colorful and cooler architecture and design.”
Structural paint is also much lighter than regular paint, does not fade over time, and requires only a thin coat to completely cover the surface, making it ideal for aerospace applications that rely on the lowest possible weight for greater fuel efficiency.
The researchers hope that structural paint cans will soon be available in hardware stores.
