Rovio released the first game in the series in 2009 and soon became a worldwide hit, spawning many sequels, spin-offs, and links to other brands such as Star Wars and Transformers. Angry Birds was even made into two feature films.

Sega has a strong lineup of mobile games, including a selection of Sonic the Hedgehog games and retro games from older consoles ported to mobile devices. The acquisition could help Sega further expand its mobile gaming business and leverage Rovio’s experience in creating popular casual games around the world.

The deal is yet to be finalized and may be cancelled, but if successful, it will mark a milestone in the video game industry.
