The Elec reports that Apple is introducing a new combination of hybrid OLED displays with the release of the iPad Pro.
It combines rigid glass substrates with flexible thin-film encapsulation (TFE), making such OLED screens thinner than ever before. The process also requires less manufacturing cost than flexible OLED panels because it does not require a backlight layer.
Conventional rigid OLED displays use two glass substrates, while hybrid displays replace the upper glass substrate with TFE. This makes the element thinner, while the remaining lower glass substrate becomes even thinner, from 0.5mm to 0.2mm.
LG is currently working on improving its manufacturing processes to reduce the chance of new OLED screens breaking during production.
The report doesn’t mention that iPad will be the first to get the update, but external analyst Ross Young predicts that Apple will introduce the first 11-inch iPad Pro models and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models with OLED displays in 2024.
