US telecommunications conglomerate AT&T has unveiled an “industry first” radar to track a person’s position and movement. The device can recognize falls and movements without additional gadgetry, which will be useful when caring for the elderly and people with limited mobility.
The Verge reports on the new AT&T development.
The device was created in partnership with medical sensor maker Cherish Health. To determine the position of the body in space, the device uses cellular communications, artificial intelligence technologies and radar. No additional devices, such as a fitness bracelet, are required.
The device runs on a constant power source and does not require constant recharging.
Cherish CEO Sumit Nagpal noted that its development has become a new opportunity to monitor home health and safety. Older people will be able to live more independently while maintaining privacy, Nagpal added.
AT&T promises to start device deliveries to customers soon: nursing homes and medical centers.
