Sberbank has started testing ATMs that are fully controlled by smartphones based on iOS or Android, the Vedomosti newspaper reports, citing Tatyana Galkina, senior vice president and head of the bank’s Sales Network block.
The customer is supposed to scan the QR code from the ATM screen, use it to go to the banking app, and select the option to withdraw or deposit cash there. It is not necessary to use a bank card.
The ATM itself is a screen and a deposit/withdraw cash slot, there is no keyboard or card reader.
Now many Russian banks can dispense cash without using a card, including Sberbank, but it is proposed to use existing ATMs in the traditional way – using a card.
According to Galkina, ATMs without the function of accepting cards are a logical continuation of the customer experience in acquisition, which allows you to pay for a purchase using a QR code. In addition, the equipment costs of a new ATM are 15% lower than those of a classic ATM and maintenance costs are 20% lower.
Sberbank did not specify how many experimental ATMs there are already now, nor who acted as the developer of the device itself.
Yesterday it became known that Sber began testing about 10,000 self-produced laptops at branches.
