Writing in The Conversation magazine, Dobson noted that oral exams are a “tried and tested” form of assessment that can provide “fair, reliable and valid” results while ensuring that student answers are genuine.

Dobson believes the importance of verbal assessments has become even more important with the rise of artificial intelligence technology, including the use of chatbots. He argues that successfully completing the oral exam can be one of the main indicators of a graduate.

Written assessments will still be important, but universities should value students’ ability to discuss acquired knowledge and skills.
