The popular IT sphere is still full of stereotypes and misconceptions. Daniil Pilipenko, Program Director of the Faculty of Backend Development at Skillbox, Director of the SymbioWay IT Specialist Recruitment Center, listed the popular myths about IT specialists and told RB.RU why they are just speculation.

The Skillbox and SymbioWay specialist dispelled the 6 most popular myths in IT

Myth 1. IT is an area of easy money

A six-figure salary will require a specialist to enhance skills, hands-on experience, and time. According to Pilipenko, at the beginning of his career, junior developers can claim a salary of 60-80 thousand rubles per month. To reach a new level of salary, it will take at least one or two years of intensive work.

Myth 2. IT is only for boys and men

Today, the most important skill for employment and a successful career is the ability to do quality work quickly and efficiently. Age and gender do not matter, the analyst stressed.

Myth 3. All IT people are tech savvy by education

According to Pilipenko, this myth is also gradually disappearing from the market. To be a good IT specialist, what is important is not technical and mathematical training, but systems thinking, which many humanities students also have. First of all, this is the ability to analyze, systematize, build a strategy, read the system of signs. For example, musicians or linguists are not considered technology experts, but they do have systems thinking skills. Therefore, it will not be difficult for them to venture into the field of information technology.

Myth 4. IT specialist = programmer

In the IT field, there is a wide range of professions, many of which are not directly related to writing code. For example, there are digital designers, project managers, various types of analysts, testers. Without the contribution of these specialists, the programmers would not be able to do their work and create products.

Myth 5. “You are a programmer”

Many people believe that if a person is a programmer, then he can do everything, or at least everything technical. For example, repair damaged equipment. But is not. Programming is writing program code, designing and creating software, which is often completely unrelated to any technology. There are specialists who create programs for devices and equipment and understand technology, but they are less than 10% of all developers.

Myth 6. Programming is boring.

People who are far from the IT sphere believe that “sitting at a computer all day” is a boring job. However, the programmers themselves consider their activity interesting, because they see its result immediately: “I wrote the code and it works!”. Programmers create useful products that are then used by thousands or even millions of people, and this is inspiring. And they also solve non-trivial complex tasks and problems in which they show a lot of creativity and a creative approach, Pilipenko concluded.

  • In December 2022, the head of the Ministry of Digital Development Maksut Shadayev estimated the number of IT specialists who left Russia at 100 thousand people, which is 10% of their total number. Shadayev noted that 80% of IT people continued to work for Russian companies, while they were not in Russia.
  • In April 2023, 60% of the IT specialists who had previously left it returned to the country, Vyacheslav Volodin said. All these people are again working at the enterprises where they worked before their departure, the chairman of the State Duma noted.
