OpenAI has filed a GPT trademark with the US Patent Office. The developer of the popular ChatGPT neural network will face difficulties registering as many US companies have already applied for a patent on GPT.

OpenAI decided to register the GPT trademark, but it turned out to be problematic

The fact that OpenAI, the developer of the popular ChatGPT neural network, has filed a GPT trademark application, TechCrunch writes.

OpenAI approached the patent office in December, but recently asked to speed up the registration process due to “many fake applications” starting to hit the market. The Office did not consider OpenAI’s application in accelerated mode, citing errors in the submitted documentation and non-payment of the fee.

In addition to OpenAI, US companies DateGPT, MedicalGPT, DirtyGPT, and others have filed applications for the GPT trademark. At the same time, Google has long used the term GPT (Generative Pretrained Transformer) to name the neural network architecture. This can complicate the registration process for OpenAI.

Under the current circumstances, the decision to grant a patent for the GPT trademark can take up to five months, Jefferson Sher, a specialist at the law firm Carr & Ferrell, told the publication.
