Rutube video hosting intends to spend about 30 billion rubles on infrastructure upgrades. The upgrade program also includes expansion of the content delivery network (CDN), Kommersant learns.
Later, a representative of the Rutube press service denied this information.
The sum of 30 billion rubles just to expand the CDN “seems excessive, unless this plan is designed for five years,” said Pavel Kulakov, chief executive of cloud provider Oxygen, who was interviewed by the newspaper.
However, Kulakov added that the announced investments “are enough to send part of the funds to the CDN and part to improve the interface, functionality, reliability and convenience of the platform as a whole.”
“Information about the large-scale spending (30 billion rubles) of the Rutube platform for the development of the video hosting infrastructure is not true. There are no such plans for the purchase of servers either from the Rutube platform or from Gazprom Media Holding, ”the video hosting press service later told RB.RU, citing Sergey Kosinsky, deputy general director of Gazprom Media Holding.
- In 2020, Gazprom-Media became the sole owner of the Rutube video service. The amount of the settlement was not disclosed at the time.
- In the spring of 2022, a cyberattack was carried out on the platform, which the service described as “the largest in history.” Video hosting was down for two days.
