Since January, the box office of Russian cinemas has exceeded the figures of 2019 before the pandemic, today they do not need additional support measures, said Vladimir Tolstoy, adviser to the president of the Russian Federation on culture.

Russian cinemas have reached the pre-pandemic tariff level – Tolstoy

“The rates from January 1, 2023 exceed the level of 2019 (…) There was no such profitability as for almost four months of this year even in the period before the pandemic,” Tolstoy told the news agency. Interfax.

He also stated that theaters do not need any support today. But if they suddenly need it in the future, the authorities are ready to consider certain measures.

Tolstoy opined that the absence of foreign films would encourage companies to “distribute releases more evenly”. That way they will stop fighting over the New Year holidays and other periods when movie attendance increases.

The presidential adviser added that there are movies, but “I wish there were more.” But this is difficult, since it takes up to three years to create a complete picture.

Previously, RBC calculated the financial losses of Russian cinemas in 2022 due to the withdrawal of the largest film studios from the Russian market. Thus, Cinema Park lost 43.2% of its income. Revenue “Kinomax” decreased by 46.6%.
