At least 20.45 gigawatts of coal-fired power plants have been approved between January and March 2023, while 18 GW has been approved for all of 2021. The surge in approvals comes after the massive power cuts China suffered in 2021 that caused the Communist Party’s energy priorities to change.

The government has previously focused on reducing coal use and developing clean energy sources, but despite China’s pledge to be carbon neutral by 2060, the power cuts seem to have changed the country’s stance.
