In this role, Ma will consult on important research topics and give lectures on business and management. The contract is valid until October, but implies the possibility of renewal once a year.

Tokyo College was established in 2019 as a link between the University of Tokyo and foreign research organizations, according to Reuters.

At the end of March, Ma returned to China after a long absence, the media reported. In his native Hangzhou, he visited the school he founded, where he expressed the hope that one day he could return to his old job as a teacher.

Ma stepped down as CEO of Alibaba in 2013 and stepped down as chairman of the board in 2019. In November 2022, the FT wrote that Ma was living in Japan.

In January this year, Reuters calculated that the businessman’s stake in the company fell from “more than 50%” to 6.2%. Ma’s fortune in 2022, according to Forbes, amounted to 23.8 billion dollars (ranked 63 in the world).
