Last Thursday (7), Google announced a major update to its popular virtual conferencing app, Meet. Now the platform will automatically close rooms and calls with only one participant unless they are active or unattended for an uninterrupted period of time.

The change will show itself with a small popup, displayed after five minutes of inactivity if the user is alone in a conference. Two alternatives will be available in it: wait for new participants or exit the meeting. If there is no decision, the virtual room will automatically close in two minutes.

While Google doesn’t state the reasoning for the change, it does suggest that it should prevent users from transmitting audio or video data undetected. However, it is noteworthy that, as with other platforms, the decision can also avoid wasting bandwidth usage. In any case, the function is on by default, but can be turned off in the Meet settings.

According to Google, the innovation will start rolling out gradually from April 11 and will take around 15 days to reach all users in PC and iOS versions. Similarly, the Android version will get the functionality soon without a specific date.
