Why do so many people believe in those who disprove the existence of climate change on our planet? There are several reasons why this type of thinking is so appealing.
Black and white thinking (all or nothing). This is a cognitive error and people are prone to it because this way of thinking simplifies the world. And it saves mental effort.
This is how black and white thinking manifests itself in people who deny the existence of global warming.
All or nothing problem. Even if 99% of scientific papers show that fossil fuels are heating the planet, people still don’t believe it. And all because there is no 100% proof of this phenomenon and you can find scientists who think differently, not the majority.
Expecting continued growth in a changing world. Those who oppose the existence of climate change argue that global temperatures do not increase at a constant rate, so there is no global warming. However, complex variables actually always fluctuate up and down in the short run, even if the trend is the same in the long run.
Inability to discover the gray area. Greenhouse gases are just one of the factors that cause the planet to warm. But it is the most important factor that people can influence. Although some say it doesn’t matter as it’s not the overriding factor.
“The climate has always changed”. This is not true at all. In addition, in the past, strong warming has already led to a catastrophe and caused a mass extinction of living things on the planet.
