Now, in order to obtain a “super steel” with low thermal conductivity, high toughness and high wear resistance, the material must be repeatedly heat treated. It is possible to harden Hadfield steel by explosive or electrophysical methods – but this is dangerous to workers. Therefore, researchers from the Siberian Federal University Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals decided to optimize the chemical composition of the material.

Scientists melted 28 samples of Hadfield steel with different proportions of alloying additives – manganese, silicon and chromium. After that, they were processed in the mode that is usually used in production. The researchers then determined the impact strength of the samples, performed a statistical analysis of the results, and determined the optimal chemical composition. According to scientists, it is possible to flexibly change the magnesium content, which will make it possible to obtain more economical alloys.

The researchers published the results of their research in the journal Metallurgist. In addition, as stated in the message of the Ministry of Education and Science, they have applied for a patent.
