The revised text targets social media apps that collect personal information and provide it to “foreign enemies.” However, the new bill could effectively ban all social media platforms in Montana, as most social media companies collect such information and share it with foreign organizations.

The project’s broad definition of “personal information” includes first and last names, online contact information and usernames inherent in the concept of social media. Therefore, if any social media company allows any user in a foreign hostile country to view the content of a Montana user, they will be banned. Additionally, platforms will be fined $10,000 each time a user from one of these countries accesses content.

So far, the text of the bill has not been revised. Time will tell where this will lead.
