Engineers have tried to activate the satellite’s propulsion system to give it a second chance at orbiting the Moon, but it may be too late. The team behind the mission can complete their work by the end of May.
LunaH-Map was developed to study possible water-ice reservoirs below the lunar surface. Iodine is used as a fuel, but it may have evaporated while sitting in the rocket for a long time. Mission engineers suspect a valve in the spacecraft’s propulsion systems is partially stuck and are attempting to use heaters to release the valve. If they fail to ignite the propulsion system by the end of this month, the mission will be officially cancelled.
