In his study of the cholera-causing bacterium Vibrio cholerae, Almagro-Moreno examined genetic variants of a protein called OmpU, which is found in the bacteria’s membranes.

The results of the study showed that some mutations in OmpU made cholera bacteria resistant to various antimicrobials. By comparing antibiotic-resistant and antibiotic-susceptible variants, the researchers identified specific OmpU locations associated with the emergence of antibiotic resistance. They also found that genetic material encoding these variants, as well as traits associated with them, can be transferred between bacterial cells.

Dr. Almagro-Moreno’s research contributes to the development of therapeutics to combat resistant infections. It also explores environmental factors such as pollution and ocean warming as potential causes of resistant bacteria.
