According to the news of Gazeta.Ru, researchers from the Siberian Federal Science Center for Agrobiotechnology of the Russian Academy of Sciences have succeeded in growing a record size of mango-shaped watermelon using a new method.

Siberian agronomists grow gourds – melons, mango-shaped watermelons and pumpkins – on city farms isolated from the natural environment. Cultures grow in a food container, where the soil is replaced with an inert substrate – drip irrigation with water with mineral fertilizers. With artificial lighting and the necessary temperature conditions, a completely artificial climate is created for the plants.

All three cultures are divided into three groups. One is grown in the usual way, in the other the seeds are soaked in a completely organic plant growth regulator for 100% germination, and in the third group the seeds are not only soaked but sprayed with this preparation.

Scientists have succeeded in growing a mango-shaped watermelon weighing five kilograms and 30 centimeters long, yellow inside with lemon and mango flavor. However, the researchers, who plan to repeat the experiment next year, say that’s not the limit. Their aim is to realize the import substitution of melon seeds in Russia.
