The new law will give the UK telecoms regulator the ability to monitor social media and other platforms, fight terrorism and child abuse and impose fines for non-compliance.
However, WhatsApp cannot comply with these requirements without violating its privacy promises. In this context, the management of the messenger, together with other companies such as Signal, signed an open letter expressing their dissatisfaction with the new bill.
The messenger is reportedly likely to leave the UK market if the law is still passed. WhatsApp head Will Cathcart noted that 98% of users are out of the country and the company does not want the product to lower its security level.
