When Chris Martin sang “no one said it would be easy”, perhaps he didn’t think his music would be quietly found in an SSD’s firmware. While asking questions, A researcher has found a secret: lyrics from Coldplay’s 2002 hit ‘The Scientist’ kingdom.

Nicholas Starke, an American security researcher, came across a surprise when analyzing an SSD controller firmware, version SKC2000_S2681103. The ZIP file had a working .bin file with the song in it.

Coldplay lyrics found in SSD controller firmware. I have no idea why it’s in the firmware. I’ve seen a lot of firmware images in my time, and it just seemed so inappropriate.” BleepingComputer.

Firmware version analyzed by Starke released in January 2020. It offered hardware performance and security improvements. SKC2000* versions usually run on Kingston’s PCI Express SSDs.

The SSD’s manufacturer did not reveal whether the Coldplay lyrics lurking on the disk were for anything or a joke from the developers. Is Kingston going to meet up with users and say they’re sorry?
