OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is in talks to invest $100 million in his own cryptocurrency Worldcoin, writes Financial Time. According to the newspaper, venture capital funds Khosla Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, one of the founders of LinkedIn, Reed Hoffman, and the founder of bankrupt crypto exchange FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried, will become investors.
According to one of the sources of the publication, not only existing investors, but also new ones will invest in the project. Worldcoin uses retina recognition technology to determine the owner of an asset.
Previously, the company sold $100 million worth of tokens. According to an FT interlocutor, in the conditions of a crypto winter, attracting such investments through a project in the field of cryptocurrencies can be considered a success.
Worldcoin executives claim that the project will help those professionals who have lost their jobs due to the development of AI technologies to receive a basic income.
The company plans to introduce its own blockchain protocol and start recording transactions within the next month and a half.
Late last year, the largest cryptocurrency exchange, FTX, filed for bankruptcy. This was preceded by a liquidity crisis for the company. The Binance exchange wanted to help a competitor by buying some of the assets, but ultimately backed out of the deal. The collapse of such a large player in the cryptocurrency market affected the industry as a whole.
As a result of the crisis, the Genesis exchange faced problems, which also filed for bankruptcy.
