Alexander Klimenko, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and leading expert of the NUST MISiS Competence Center, told Gazeta.Ru that slowing the growth of the Earth’s population for 25-50 years is the only chance to stop global warming on Earth.
The expert states that the world community will not be able to approach the required decarbonization speed of the world economy. The gap between actual and planned carbon emissions continues to widen. Therefore, the Glasgow Climate Pact’s decarbonisation program adopted at the end of 2021 at the UN Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change cannot be implemented.
According to the expert, there is no opportunity in the world to keep the temperature rise at 2.0°C or even 1.5°C and only suspension of world population growth over the lifetime of the current or next generation can help get to this point. sure
Reducing methane emissions and restoring the planet’s forestland can also help slow global warming. However, the former grow in the poorest countries in the world, whose population growth has frustrated the efforts of developed countries, and young trees do not process carbon dioxide efficiently and cannot compensate for the loss of mature felled forests.
