The analysis showed the presence of water vapor in the comet’s gas cloud, suggesting the possibility of water ice being ubiquitous in this part of the solar system.

Surprisingly, unlike other comets, 238P/Read did not detect any appreciable amounts of carbon dioxide. The researchers offered two possible explanations: The comet may have lost carbon dioxide due to high temperatures, or it may have formed in a region without carbon dioxide.

Further telescope observations will shed light on the composition of other comets and asteroids in the asteroid belt and deepen our understanding of these celestial bodies.
