The researchers were particularly interested in the bubbles that remained attached to the straw-like tube instead of leaving it. Chardin and Manet’s paintings depict just such bubbles. Chardin’s paintings in particular rendered the colors of the soap film with scientific precision. The phenomenon of iridescence in soap bubbles when different colors appear due to interference was described by Isaac Newton in his treatise “Optics”.

Grosjean and Lorenzo focused their experiments on bubble formation in microfluidic scenarios. They found that the initial volume of the air reservoir plays a critical role in controlling the size of the bubbles during formation.

Their results made it possible to develop an analytical model that predicts the dynamics of bubble growth and its final volume.
