The Russian branch of the international fund Greenpeace International announced the closure in connection with the recognition of its undesirable organization in Russia. This was reported by the organization’s press service on the official website.
“We express our categorical disagreement with the decision of the Attorney General’s Office. This decision makes it illegal for any Greenpeace activities to continue in Russia. Therefore, the Russian branch of Greenpeace will be forced to close,” Greenpeace said in a statement.
“The liquidation of Greenpeace in Russia is an absurd, irresponsible and destructive step that has nothing to do with the protection of the country’s interests,” the organization added.
On May 19, the Russian Federation Prosecutor General’s Office recognized the Russian branch of Greenpeace as an undesirable organization. The department considered that its activities threaten the foundations of Russia’s constitutional order and security.
Greenpeace’s Russian division was established in 1992 and has been operating in the country for more than 30 years.
