Users of SanDisk’s Extreme V2 and Extreme Pro V2 portable SSDs faced a major problem four months ago when the disks became unreadable. Devices also suddenly deleted saved data. Just now, the manufacturer announced a “soon” fix.

The solution won’t put all users at ease, as SanDisk says only 4TB models will receive a firmware update. People with 2TB hardware will have to wait longer for a solution.

“Sometimes you can recover it using DiskDrill’s filesystem rebuild, but sometimes it doesn’t do anything. It goes with all kinds of filesystems,” says one report on the issue on Reddit.

The flaw affects a new line of products manufactured in November 2022. Web site Ars Teknik also reported that read and write errors occur when 2TB Extreme Pro drives reach half capacity usage. It looks clean when disconnecting and reconnecting the external memory.

SanDisk said it was aware of the issues, but only highlighted issues on “Extreme and/or Extreme Pro 4TB (SDSSDE61-4T00 and SDSSDE81-4T00, respectively)” laptops. The company claims that a firmware update containing a fix will be posted on its website “soon”..

The company’s note states, “Customers with questions or problems should contact our Customer Support team for assistance.” The company only offers money back within 30 days of purchase, but the units have a five-year warranty.
