In a recent community post, Google acknowledges that some devices sold under the name “Android TV” actually use the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) rather than Google’s official Android TV operating system.

Such AOSP devices may contain Google and Play Store applications without proper Google licensing. To help consumers make an informed purchase, Google recommends visiting the official Android TV website, which lists products from authorized partners.

Also, Google pays attention to the Play Protect certification in the Play Store, which confirms that the devices have an official Google license.

The company provides detailed steps on its support page to help users verify the authenticity of their device.
