Researchers from Russia, together with their Belarusian colleagues, have developed a new option for obtaining aluminum bronzes with improved mechanical properties. The results of the scientists’ work are published in the journal Materials Letters.

The properties of aluminum bronzes allow them to be used in shipbuilding as well as in the aerospace and jewelry industries. However, alloying with nickel and iron is used to strengthen them.

Specialists of the Institute of Solid State Chemistry and Mechanochemistry, Institute of Hydrodynamics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Joint Mechanical Engineering Institute of the Belarusian National Academy of Sciences and Novosibirsk State Technical University MA Lavrentiev SB RAS proposed a method for the production of bronze, the only alloying element of which is aluminum. The powders passed through the high-energy mill are sintered by electric current. The result is a dense bulk material.

Its properties – especially electrical conductivity – are not inferior to the best examples used in mechanical engineering today, and in terms of mechanical strength it surpasses similar commercial bronzes of similar composition.

All this allows the bronze developed by Siberian researchers to be easily pressure-processed at high and low temperatures, making it a promising material for the manufacture of parts operating at high loads and at high speeds.
